The DoubleTree by Hilton Charleston Riverview receives mixed reviews, with recent feedback highlighting issues related to noise levels, cleanliness concerns, and inconsistent service. While some guests appreciate the convenient location and friendly staff, others have experienced problems with room conditions, bathroom hygiene, and operational errors such as billing discrepancies.
I was booked into this hotel for a work trip, so I guess "beggars can't be choosers", but I was unpleasantly surprised by a few things. The main one being the party atmosphere, which was very odd for a beside-the-highway hotel. Normally I don't write reviews, but I had not seen this part mentioned: my room was facing the pool/patio area, which was nice, except that there was a large group from another conference staying at the hotel who was very loud, using the pool and the patio and partying past 11pm on a Wednesday. Probably 1/3 of the rooms face the pool courtyard area. It wasn't just loud voices, it was people chanting "SHOT! SHOT! SHOT!" and nothing was being done about it by hotel staff. I did call the front desk (and apparently a few of my colleagues also did) and they said they would speak to the guests about being more courteous. It did quiet down a bit. But I'm surprised that there aren't nighttime hours when the patio area closes or quiet hours enforced. It was also strange that the hotel piped pop music to the patio all night (which could also be heard from the rooms). Disappointing when a number of us had a full day of meetings the next day and needed a good night's sleep. Overall, I found the staff to be friendly and courteous. We took advantage of the shuttle service to/from downtown Charleston for a few hours, and Johnathan was easy to communicate with and right on time. This was very convenient. The gym was closed for renovations, which was disappointing, but Johnathan tried to give me some options for walking paths (which were not great, but he tried). There were a few other things that could have improved the experience: The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable, but I would have appreciated some firmer pillow options. The shower floor was textured and it seemed that it was not fully clean, or not able to be fully cleaned. The shower water was not very hot. The hotel bar/restaurant was unable to accept credit cards both nights I was there (cash/charge to room only). This seemed strange for it to be an ongoing problem. I think that attention to detail could improve the guest experience, especially regarding outdoor quiet hours.
We stay at Hilton properties at least four times a year and visit Charleston annually, so we've come to expect a certain level of quality and consistency. Unfortunately, this was by far the most disappointing Hilton stay we've experienced. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and courteous, and we appreciate their professionalism. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. The room itself was below our expectations. The layout was awkward and not very functional, and there was essentially no river view except when driving into the hotel. We also understand and appreciate that the hotel is pet-friendly. However, pet owners should be expected to be considerate of other guests. We experienced frequent barking at all hours of the day and night, which made it difficult to relax and sleep. Additionally, the bathroom was not up to Hilton standards, as there was visible mold around the base of the shower. Overall, this stay did not reflect the level of quality we've come to expect from Hilton. While we will continue staying at Hilton properties in the future, this will be our first and last stay at this particular location.
June 2026 - Lobby & common areas are nice. Employees were all very friendly. While the 2 room suite was spacious, it left a lot to be desired- Air conditioner was very loud & didn't regulate temperature well. Shower had low water pressure. Bathroom door (barn-door type slider) was so difficult to close it took 2 people (one pushing, one pulling). Pillows were flat, non-supportive & uncomfortable. Bed\mattress itself was decent. Pull-out sofa extremely thin & uncomfortable mattress. Definitely a disappointment for the price and this level of Hilton property. Will not rush back to stay here again.
Do not stay at this hotel. There is nothing 3 star about it. You can find a better room at motel6. This place is a rip off. Why? 1. The hotel does not keep clean properly. Food waste is left out overnight and no cleaning crew apparently until the AM. The elevator floor as well is dirty, the one that was in service if the two they had. This last for parts of three days. The kitchen/bar area has an espresso machine for the morning to.make espresso I presume but the.kady in that area had no clue what to do and couldn't make it . What's the point? You out out some garbage coffee in the lobby The breakfast there is a " buffet" but it's really just some eggs , bacon and grits with some fruit bowl . This they charge 15.99 per person for. This could be a free breakfast many places. Also the towels must be picked up by you at the desk if you want more, why? These are just the small.issues I had in addition to my girlfriend finding a palmetto bug in the bathroom which freaked her out. The front desk/ automated system, bit sure which decided to try and charge me twice on two different cards I used, one to reserve and one to pay when I checked in. I had to cancel my card for fraud because.of this activity suspected fraud. I reached out to the general manager and gave him 4 days to respond, nothing. So that's Why you need to stay away from DoubleTree Charleston Riverview. Zero stars if it was possible to put it.
Nice hotel but not up to true Hilton standard. Requested (and was confirmed by staff ) decaf to be in room; wasn’t. Light enclosure was empty at coffee area in room so was too dark to see. Got in shower before realized NO BATH towels in room. Told at their nice in-house breakfast they didn’t serve decaf coffee. Lodged complaint at reception regarding all and saw info documented. At dinner ordered strawberry cheesecake ( to go). Traveling so didn’t check til later. $10 Cheesecake was tiny (1-1/2” at back) with a dry, sliced half strawberry. Contacted customer service after that. They reached out to hotel while I was on phone but could not confirm my complaint. Like I said, not Hilton quality.
Nice hotel! Would come here again. Far away enough from downtown you don't have to worry about too much traffic and close to folly beach. Only concern I had was possible mold in the bathroom shower, see pictures. ???? *google will not upload my photos to show the mold in bathroom.
Great location, easy to find, easy parking and check in. There is a bar/restaurant, Renee there was fantastic to chat with. Ended up booking another night as the beds were comfortable, room was quiet and the front desk workers (Patti in particular) were so friendly and ready to give local recommendations for everything. There is a shuttle to downtown, and they were kind enough to take us to a restaurant and pick us up after. Will stay here again every time I come to Charleston!
We stayed here for our Christmas visit to Charleston. We ate downtown and visited the James Island Festival of Lights. This hotel is perfectly situated to enjoy both conveniently. Dee was very friendly and informative at check-in. The free shuttle was not running which was a bit disappointing. The rooms have been recently renovated. My wife and I were very comfortable. We have paid a lot more in Charleston and not been so well taken care of. The parking lot is easy to navigate (which cannot be said of all hotels in the area). Prices in the Market are reasonable. The room had a nice view of the city. It was quiet and clean. We will stay here again.
Nice hotel, good location, relatively quiet. Room was clean and has everything you need. Microwave, mini fridge, iron. Ask for a room away from the road or you'll hear constant vehicle noise. Only negative was the hot water. Shower water was sort of hot and did cycle in temp a bit but never got cool. Sink water didn't get hot, only tepid, no matter how long it ran. Staff was helpful and pleasant. Parking around back. Descent size room for two people. Bar/restaurant needs to change the music they play. Not really pleasant, not really appropriate to hear. Also, the common areas need attention to wipe off finger prints and marks from the elevators and doors.
So this hotel wasn’t built a DoubleTree from scratch. This was an old Cambria hotel owned by Choice. Hilton took over in August. Cambria did not keep up with the appearance of the hotel and Choice staff isn’t on the same level as Hilton. I would assume that Hilton probably kept most of the staff from the other company and that’s the biggest part of this hotels problem. Upon check in, went to the room and it was gross. A Gatorade bottle next to the chaise lounge and plastic pieces on the bathroom counter. Front desk lady was apologetic and super friendly…on to the next room. This room had toothpaste splatter on the mirror and pee dribbles on the toilet seat. On to the third room…like all the others, dirty but I was tired and it was going to have to do. Woke up the next morning, took a shower and when finished took the floor towel and dried up all the shower water that gets on the floor since there’s no door for the shower. The picture is of the towel showing just how dirty the freaking bathroom floor was! I checked out after one night of my initial four night stay. The place is gross, the pillows aren’t the normal DoubleTree pillows one has come to expect, all the chaise lounges smell of wet dog, no streaming services on the TV and yada yada. If this is someone’s first experience with a DoubleTree…I’m sorry!! The DoubleTree brand as a whole is so so much better than this wannabe DoubleTree.
