The Francis Marion Hotel is a historic Charleston landmark offering an elegant and centrally located stay. Guests consistently praise the friendly and professional staff, the hotel's beautiful architecture, and its convenient proximity to downtown attractions. While some rooms may be slightly dated, many reviewers highlight the overall charming atmosphere and excellent service.
Stayed at the Francis Marion Hotel during my visit to Charleston and had a wonderful experience. The hotel was clean, well-maintained, and beautifully preserved with plenty of historic charm. The staff were consistently friendly, professional, and eager to help with recommendations and any questions I had throughout my stay. The location is excellent, making it easy to explore downtown Charleston on foot. My room was comfortable, quiet, and well-kept, and the overall atmosphere felt welcoming and organized. If you’re looking for a classic Charleston hotel with great service and a convenient location, the Francis Marion is a fantastic choice. I would gladly stay here again. Wade the bellman was amazing and so kind!
????? Outstanding Conference Experience I recently stayed at the Francis Marion Hotel while attending a professional conference, and the experience exceeded expectations in every way. My room was exceptionally comfortable, beautifully appointed, and remarkably well maintained for a historic property. The hotel itself is elegant, welcoming, and perfectly suited for conferences and events. What truly stood out, however, was the quality of the food and beverage service. From breakfast and lunch to the evening receptions, every meal was excellent, with outstanding variety, quality, and presentation. It was easily the best conference catering I have experienced. The conference technology and support were equally impressive. Large screens, microphones, and audiovisual systems worked flawlessly throughout the event—something that is far rarer than it should be. Every member of the hotel staff contributed to a seamless experience, demonstrating professionalism, attention to detail, and genuine hospitality. The Francis Marion delivered a truly first-class experience, and I would gladly stay here again.
Everything (and everyone) about the Francis Marion was exquisite. The building is over 100 years old. As such, the room and bath was a bit small but what we had was comfortable and done well. Other aspects of the grand building were magnificent. We enjoyed the large sitting areas on the main level and the live piano in the late afternoons/evenings. We found the restaurant and food to be excellent. Every member of the service staff we interacted with were either amazingly well trained and committed or amazing people. Perhaps they were both. And location? Good heavens it is perfect. Within a short walk of stops for each of the three free Carta Dash routes. Shopping and other restaurants are also close by.
This is a charming hotel that made for a very enjoyable stay. The rooms are well-appointed, and the beds are especially comfortable. Our view overlooking the park was beautiful, with a glimpse of the bridge in the distance that added to the overall ambiance. One of my favorite touches was that the windows open slightly, letting in the sounds of the city—it was fun getting ready in the evening while hearing the energy outside, even catching music from a band playing at a nearby rooftop bar. The location is also a big plus. Having a Starbucks nearby made mornings easy, and the hotel’s in-house restaurant offered solid, enjoyable meals. We were in town for a conference, and the meeting spaces were comfortable, well-organized, and nicely done. Overall, a great blend of comfort, location, and atmosphere. Highly recommend using valet, as the parking garage elevator is almost always broken, and carrying your luggage up and down the stairs is not ideal.
One of my favorite hotel ever! My boyfriend Michael Taylor has a great meeting at the Country Club for business. He took me there it was amazing couple days! Fresh flowers! My goodness !! Enjoy ??
Charlestown is a very expensive town and we had one night to stay here. We wanted something quiet, clean and well located so we could quickly and easily walk to the downtown historic sites, restaurants, and waterfront. The Francis Marion Hotel was perfect for that. We had a “traditional room with a water view” that was clean and very comfortable but on the small side. No matter as we were hardly there. The location was outstanding and staff extremely nice and helpful.
Stayed here for a wedding. It’s an old building with a lot of character, whether that’s a feature depends on your preference. The restaurant needs some love. There is a very reasonably priced shuttle service to the airport if you ask the front desk. It cost us less than a ride share and was a better service.
I had a great stay at Francis Marion Hotel. The building and rooms were spotless. I was honestly shocked that there was no mold anywhere, especially because there was no fan in the bathroom — but everything was extremely well kept and very clean. My favorite part was the cookies they put out each day (even though the time changed each day ). The water was also delicious. Overall, it was a great stay and I loved the rooms.
The wow factor? Real eggs! Yes, I Googled it; there’s only a handful of hotels in Charleston that don’t serve up rehydrated powdered eggs for their expensive buffet breakfast. The Bennett down the street there is one; the Francis Marion is another. Yes, $15 gets you two eggs done your way, for me it’s over easy, and a magnificent bottomless buffet, the likes of which I haven’t seen since Brazil or Turkey. If you’re like me you’ll love the peaceful period music or live piano player. The room? Spacious, quiet, well equipped with a small refrigerator and a Keurig, and incredibly comfortable beds. Room service prompt and generous. Friendly staff. Safe environment. Good WiFi for work and TV selection for sports. You already know about the great location, right?
Very pretty Hotel in a great location!!! Gives a Doris Day, Rocky Hudson type vibe. It is an old hotel!!! It doesn't have a hot tub, pool, smart TV, Commodes flush weird and we had to call for service to get our heat going in the room (they came quickly and fixed it ?) It got down into the low 30's. Bathrooms were small but our room had 2 so that bashed it out a lil. There was a safe in the closet and an ice machine close by. No microwave, but a keurig coffee maker and a small fridge. Parking is in the city garage and it does cost! Vallet is available. There is no free breakfast but room service is available and free delicious coffee and fruit infused water, sometimes snacks like muffins or cookies are available in the lobby. And the option to reserve a table at the Swamp Fox which is another 5 star review. Loved it!!! Now that the negatives are out of the way let's talk why I gave this hotel 5 stars I already mentioned they came quickly to fix our heat. The coffee and water refreshments were delicious and location was great. Staff was super friendly!!!!! Southern hospitality at its finest! In the evening hours someone played classical piano in the lobby (I truly enjoyed this). Beds were VERY comfortable. Personally, probably one of the most comfortable beds away from home. The Francis Marion is a beautiful, fancy spa like scented place to stay in Charleston and a historical southern charm. I was greatly pleased and my favorite part was the prime location and glorious view!!! The color scheme and chandeliers added a nice touch as well.
