The Francis Marion Hotel offers a historic Charleston experience with a prime location and generally positive guest feedback. While many appreciate its charm, elegant lobby, and comfortable beds, some have noted issues with dated rooms, inconsistent bathroom quality, and occasional service hiccups. Recent reviews highlight the hotel’s strong Southern hospitality and delicious breakfast options.
One of my favorite hotel ever! My boyfriend Michael Taylor has a great meeting at the Country Club for business. He took me there it was amazing couple days! Fresh flowers! My goodness !! Enjoy ??
Charlestown is a very expensive town and we had one night to stay here. We wanted something quiet, clean and well located so we could quickly and easily walk to the downtown historic sites, restaurants, and waterfront. The Francis Marion Hotel was perfect for that. We had a “traditional room with a water view” that was clean and very comfortable but on the small side. No matter as we were hardly there. The location was outstanding and staff extremely nice and helpful.
Stayed here for a wedding. It’s an old building with a lot of character, whether that’s a feature depends on your preference. The restaurant needs some love. There is a very reasonably priced shuttle service to the airport if you ask the front desk. It cost us less than a ride share and was a better service.
I had a great stay at Francis Marion Hotel. The building and rooms were spotless. I was honestly shocked that there was no mold anywhere, especially because there was no fan in the bathroom — but everything was extremely well kept and very clean. My favorite part was the cookies they put out each day (even though the time changed each day ). The water was also delicious. Overall, it was a great stay and I loved the rooms.
The wow factor? Real eggs! Yes, I Googled it; there’s only a handful of hotels in Charleston that don’t serve up rehydrated powdered eggs for their expensive buffet breakfast. The Bennett down the street there is one; the Francis Marion is another. Yes, $15 gets you two eggs done your way, for me it’s over easy, and a magnificent bottomless buffet, the likes of which I haven’t seen since Brazil or Turkey. If you’re like me you’ll love the peaceful period music or live piano player. The room? Spacious, quiet, well equipped with a small refrigerator and a Keurig, and incredibly comfortable beds. Room service prompt and generous. Friendly staff. Safe environment. Good WiFi for work and TV selection for sports. You already know about the great location, right?
Very pretty Hotel in a great location!!! Gives a Doris Day, Rocky Hudson type vibe. It is an old hotel!!! It doesn't have a hot tub, pool, smart TV, Commodes flush weird and we had to call for service to get our heat going in the room (they came quickly and fixed it ?) It got down into the low 30's. Bathrooms were small but our room had 2 so that bashed it out a lil. There was a safe in the closet and an ice machine close by. No microwave, but a keurig coffee maker and a small fridge. Parking is in the city garage and it does cost! Vallet is available. There is no free breakfast but room service is available and free delicious coffee and fruit infused water, sometimes snacks like muffins or cookies are available in the lobby. And the option to reserve a table at the Swamp Fox which is another 5 star review. Loved it!!! Now that the negatives are out of the way let's talk why I gave this hotel 5 stars I already mentioned they came quickly to fix our heat. The coffee and water refreshments were delicious and location was great. Staff was super friendly!!!!! Southern hospitality at its finest! In the evening hours someone played classical piano in the lobby (I truly enjoyed this). Beds were VERY comfortable. Personally, probably one of the most comfortable beds away from home. The Francis Marion is a beautiful, fancy spa like scented place to stay in Charleston and a historical southern charm. I was greatly pleased and my favorite part was the prime location and glorious view!!! The color scheme and chandeliers added a nice touch as well.
This hotel is definitely not worth the price. It’s extremely expensive for what it offers. The beds were uncomfortable, the rooms were small and dusty, and the bathroom was tiny. Hot water took forever to heat up, and the toilet flushed so loudly that using it at night would wake up the entire family. On the bright side, at least there were no bugs. But another thing I liked was that they have room service even though we didn’t order in, and that this is one of the few hotels that has a 12 pm check out. Free parking was not included, which was very frustrating given the already high room rate. On top of that, we had to find parking ourselves and pay for overnight/day parking. For the price and the downtown location, I expected parking to be included so we could actually enjoy Charleston without worrying about our car or additional costs. Also, we were with a kid, and the elevators were… interesting. You had to first go to one tiny elevator with our stroller just to enter the lobby before you could access another elevator to go to your room. It was confusing and inconvenient, especially with a child. The hotel is also not located in a particularly nice part of downtown, which is important to know before booking. When we were leaving and walking through the parking lot, a man ran toward us asking for a ride because he said someone was trying to kill him. That experience alone made us feel extremely unsafe, and I would not stay in this area again. Honestly, how’s this a 4-star hotel? I don’t understand. While I appreciate history, this hotel didn’t feel charming, historic, or interesting—just outdated. In this case, it would be better to leave the past in the past and focus on more modern, comfortable, and well-located accommodations.
An absolutely charming hotel located in the perfect area of Charleston. We loved our Thanksgiving weekend stay in a (the?) Francis Marion Suite. A well appointed space that still allows you to enjoy the fact that this is an historic hotel. All of the public areas remind you that this hotel has a rich history, and all of the staff, from Valet, to Front Desk, Concierge and Housekeeping were fantastic. Finally, this review simply isn't complete without a mention of the Thanksgiving Brunch that we enjoyed on Thursday afternoon. It was so delightful that we are considering a return visit for a Thanksgiving in the next year or two. The food was superb, with a delightful nod to Southern cuisine. The staff on hand to handle serving and busing were absolutely top notch as they were friendly, helpful and professional. I will mention that there was an issue with the television in our room experiencing reception issues so we could not watch the Macy's parade, but there was nothing that would materially detract from an overwhelmingly positive stay at The Francis Marion. We would recommend The Francis Marion without hesitation.
Dont waste your money here, there are better hotels in the area. I stayed here for my conference, the rooms are tiny and dark and expensive for no apparent reason. Nothing is upgraded in this hotel except for lobby. The rooms and lobby has no microwave so ready to hand your food to receptionist and they will go in the back and warm it up for you. Bathroom has no drainage blockers so if you drop anything you will loose it. windows and walls are not sound proof, and as per hotel staff they are not allowed to have sound proof windows or walls. so anything happening outside, even a cough next door you will hear it. so forget about good night sleep. The hotel is located in front of college campus so there is always partying outside and you can hear everything. You have to pay for breakfast. There is no cable channels, you have to connect to wifi and stream from your phone. Last but not least the day I suppose to check out since 8am to 12pm I had 4 people knock on my door and ask me if I was leaving and that is with Do not disturb sign hanging on my door and that is also with me telling them I am doing late check out at 1pm and I have already told the receptionist a day before. Trust me just book a better hotel in that area you will save yourself a lot of hassel.
This beautiful historic hotel fit all my needs. If you love history- this is the hotel! It's beautifully decorated. The lobby takes you back to the old stately hotels. The chandeliers are beautiful. The rooms are spacious our room overlooked King Street which is on the main hub of Charleston. The beds are comfy. Each room has a small refrigerator. The hotel provides room service. We ate a delicious breakfast at the nearby Swamp Fox restaurant as well as we hung in their bar. Its small yet ideal if you want an afternoon drink. While we did have a rental car we were in walking distance to excellent shopping, lovely festive bars, coffee shops, the Mother Emmanuel church ( which we attended Sunday service) was also in walking distance!.The staff were all super friendly. I've stayed at the Francis Marion before, the valet staff are excellent as well. I absolutely love it.
