Embassy Suites Historic Charleston offers a blend of modern comfort and historic charm in the heart of downtown Charleston. Located in a beautifully restored historic building, the hotel is within walking distance of shopping, dining, and iconic attractions. Guests can enjoy spacious two-room suites, complimentary made-to-order breakfast, and evening receptions in a refined Southern atmosphere.
The Embassy Suites Historic Charleston receives mixed reviews, primarily driven by concerns regarding dated room conditions and inconsistent service. While praised for its convenient location, proximity to attractions, and complimentary offerings like breakfast and evening snacks, many guests reported issues with room cleanliness, outdated furnishings, and occasional staff responsiveness. Recent renovations are mentioned, but not yet universally impactful.
The staff has been consistently helpful although when we mentioned about the quality of our room, they just said "we will be renovating soon." Not even an apology. That doesn't address our stay now. Hilton should be ashamed of this property. It feels like a worn out college dorm room. The furniture is beat up, carpet torn and stained, there is no place to hang a towel in the bathroom, the mirror over the sofa (which is worn out too) is mounted crooked, the curtains to the interior facing window are barely hanging on the rod, and there are no exterior windows so the lighting is poor. For the money we paid this is beyond a disappointment. I expect more from an Embassy Suites and far more from Hilton. 3-7-2026: To add insult to injury here, I received the response below from the hotel WHILE I WAS STILL STAYING HERE. It is nice that for service recovery they make me now call a help line and reiterate the whole situation again. What horrible management of customer concerns. Downgrading my score to 1. They had a chance to recover this one and they have now failed.
The property benefits greatly from its location, which remains its strongest attribute convenient and practical for both business and leisure stays. The suite itself was spacious and functional; however, the absence of a window significantly affected the overall comfort. Natural light plays an essential role in creating a sense of openness and ease, and without it, the room felt more enclosed than expected for a suite category. Service was consistent and professional throughout the stay. A notable highlight is the complimentary breakfast and evening snacks a thoughtful and generous touch that adds real value. These offerings help elevate the experience and create a welcoming, communal atmosphere. Overall, the hotel delivers solid fundamentals, with the inclusive food and beverage offerings standing out as a meaningful advantage. With improved room design considerations particularly access to natural light the stay would feel considerably more elevated.
The bath tub was rusted by the faucet The faucet in the bathtub did not turn off completely, it dripped the whole time The sink in the “kitchen” did not drain at all. I had to turn off the faucet and wait 5 minutes for it to drain There was a soft spot on the floor in the hallway by the bedroom door where you could fall through if the carpet broke The fridge didn’t work correctly Door seal was non existent and light shined through the door at night. Stains on the carpet AC did not work Breakfast was meh and I was fussed at when I asked a question about where something was located. Just pick a better place! One should not spend this much moneys on a sub par room!
This hotel was pretty mediocre. While I understand that they’re going for the old-school, historic vibe, I found it to be kind of run-down and dainty, and that it missed the mark on the “snapshot of history” angle that they were going for. Furthermore, the staff was nice whenever I needed to speak to them, but it was kind of hard to find a staff member sometimes, leaving me having to hunt one down on a couple of occasions. As for the positives: it’s in a great location right on King Street, making it perfect place to explore Charleston on foot, the Christmas tree in the foyer was beautiful, and the aforementioned foyer is huge, making it a great place to sit down if you want to get out of your room for a little bit.
Now, let me be clear. When you walk into this building—the Old Citadel—you are struck by the architecture. It is magnificent. It speaks to the history of Charleston, and the preservation work they’ve done to maintain that character is truly impressive. The location is also top-tier; you’re right in the heart of everything, within walking distance of the history and the culture that makes this city so special. We also appreciated that the property is pet-friendly. It’s important to have a place that welcomes every member of the family included. And I have to say, the bed was exceptionally comfortable. We can all agree that after a long day of meetings or sightseeing, having a good place to rest your head matters. However... we also have to talk about the details. Because the details matter. While the bones of the building are historic, the interior—the decor, the rugs, and the TVs—feel like they’re stuck in a different era. They’re outdated, and they don’t quite live up to the grandeur of the exterior. There were also some fundamental issues: The Bathroom: The shower pressure was weak, and more importantly, we found a clump of hair on the shower wall. Now, folks, that’s just a basic service requirement that wasn't met. The toilet paper holder was also quite flimsy—not exactly the kind of structural integrity you're looking for. The Wake-up Call: I’m an early riser, but having an unprompted alarm clock go off at 6:30 AM because of a previous guest’s settings... that’s not the kind of relaxation we’re looking for in the morning. It’s a beautiful property with a lot of heart, but it needs a bit of a renewal project to really reach its full potential.
We booked a room with a view and asked not to be near the elevators. We checked in and the room wasn't at all what we asked for. Room #130 needs to be condemned. It smells bad, has nasty stains in the carpet. Frame around the sink is falling apart. Should be ashamed to charge for that room at all. So we asked for another room. They gave us #230 right above, we stayed on night there and the bed was rock hard the floor was softer. We asked if there was ANY room with a view, didn't care about the beds. They gave us a room on the fourth floor with double beds. SO much better. Great view, beds were much softer and slept well. Staff was very nice; the breakfasts were good with a very good selection to choose from. The website says the rooms have Keurig coffee machines and they do not! Coffee in the room wasn't good at all. Why we brought our own K-cups but couldn't use them. Valet parking was nice and convenient. We would stay here again as long as we get another room like the one, we left. Also, the nightly reception was nice to wind down to after a day of sightseeing with a drink and snacks.
We had a great stay here! We were a little concerned with the reviews we read but remained optimistic. The room itself does need some TLC. The breakfast was good and had great choices. The evening happy hour was a nice benefit. We did have a little bit of wait with the valet but not terrible. Was within walking distance of so many great restaurants and shops! We will be coming back for another stay here. Keep in mind this is a pet friendly hotel. Also the building itself is a historic monument so there is some Character to it. Loved it here will be back for sure!
Our room was sold out from underneath us. We paid for Thursday-Sunday night and arrived early Friday morning due to flights being delayed. Room was not ready. Young woman at front desk was rude to everyone and not in uniform. They did nothing to make it better. Said they would call when room was ready, but never called so we headed to hotel after waiting 5 hours and magically it was ready. Some of our towels were dirty. Room was 217 in the corner of the 2nd floor. Room was sizeable with a whirlpool. Whirlpool didn't work. Told front desk and they did nothing to help. Said they would send maintenance and they never came. Room smelled like a wet dog. It was an awful smell every time we came back to our room. Breakfast was nice but one day they had nothing clean - no plates or forks. Main breakfast room can get very crowded depending on population of occupants. Hotel is aged and a lot of carpet in a pet friendly hotel. The only positive was the location. Located between Meeting and King, we were in walking distance to most of everything we wanted to do. If you have mobility issues, this hotel is 1 mile from the French Quarter. Farmers Market outside the door on Saturday was nice. If you want an aged, stinky hotel within walking distance to some things, this hotel is for you.
This hotel is absolutely beautiful! Having a room with a door when traveling with a teenager is perfect. This way they can get the privacy they want when you're done for the day. Also, really appreciate the nightlight in the bathroom! The room can be really dark. The breakfast is the highlight of staying here! The staff are so nice and helpful. Please be mindful and not let your door slam, it is so easy to hear your neighbors. And be nice to the staff! All the rooms are the same, no reason to yell at a young lady because you think you're better than everyone else.
This hotel has a great location. Close to shops and restaurants. Everything is very walkable. The hotel food was good and the happy hour was great. The rooms however need an update. They have not been updated in a long time and it shows. The beds were very comfortable however. The hotel staff was great.
