The Embassy Suites Historic Charleston offers a prime location in the heart of Charleston, capitalizing on its historic charm and proximity to attractions. However, recent reviews indicate a significant disparity between the hotel's outward appearance and the condition of the rooms, with concerns about outdated furnishings, cleanliness issues, and basic maintenance needs. Despite friendly staff and some positive aspects like breakfast and evening social hour, the property requires substantial investment to address the reported problems and fully meet expectations.
The building is beautiful, in a great location, and has so much potential. The staff were wonderful! The rooms - terrible! I could not believe this was a Hilton property. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls, the tub and grout in the bathroom was black. The thermostat looked like something out of the 70s. Will not be back.
Well, the water pressure, location, staff, and breakfast were good... Service gets 5*, room gets 1* First off, WHY can't you add keycard re-entry at the side doors like EVERY other Hilton property? Forcing guests to walk all the way around to the front, away from all the restaurants and shopping, because you won't add keycard access to the other exits is just lazy. The rooms and hallways need simple fixes, management/ownership seem to not care about anything beyond how it looks from the outside and the lobby. Strips of wallpaper falling off the bathroom walls, the vanity above the bathroom mirror was leaning forward 45 degrees off the wall, outlets sparked when used, 32 inch tv's need updating, couches/furniture/carpet need updating also. All the wooden furniture was worn so much the bare wood was exposed under the furniture stain. Our one bedroom double suite faced an alleyway and was like a tunnel, far smaller than most 1br Embassy Suite rooms. It's honestly sad. It's all simple cosmetic stuff a crew could fix in a day moving room by room. The bones of the hotel are amazing, beautiful location, solid structure, etc. The staff cares, and were all friendly, the breakfast with made to order omelets was amazing! Management and ownership just need to update the rooms and it would easily be a 5 star location. They're relying on their location to get away with letting everything else slide. This could easily be one of the best Embassy Suites on the East Coast, if they cared. Also, check you're bill if you're traveling with a pet, we added that option when booking through hilton.com, but they tried to manually add it again on top of the one we already paid. They did refund us, but definitely check your statement for accuracy. And the $50/day valet is basically a requirement, there is a city owned lot nearby for $25/day, but it's about a block walk from the entrance.
We enjoyed our stay. Tristin was so helpful throughout our time in Charleston. He made sure we were taken care and saved the day so many times. The location was perfect. Breakfast was amazing. The social hour was fun. Although a little dated in the rooms it fits the historic aesthetic of the city. This hotel is so charming. We will be staying here for all future visits to Charleston.
I recently stayed here for a business function with SC250, and I cannot say enough wonderful things about my experience. From the moment I arrived, the hospitality was absolutely top-tier. Every single employee I encountered was exceptional, welcoming, and professional. The valet team made arrival seamless, the front desk check-in was incredibly warm, and the breakfast staff went above and beyond to start my mornings off right. Note that the valet staff helped me several times a day and always with a smile! Located perfectly near Marion Square, this hotel truly understands outstanding customer service. They treated me phenomenally throughout my entire stay, and I highly recommend them to anyone traveling to Charleston for business or leisure!
I had very high hopes going into this stay, especially considering the price per night, but this ended up being one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve had. The front desk receptionists were kind and welcoming, which was honestly the only positive part of the stay. As soon as I walked into the room, there was a horrendous smell of mold and wet towels that completely filled the room and bathroom. The bathroom itself was extremely dirty, poorly maintained, and smelled awful. For the price paid, the condition of the room was completely unacceptable. The worst part happened the next morning around 7:50 AM when housekeeping attempted to enter the room without properly knocking or announcing themselves. If I hadn’t been standing right by the door, they would have walked in on my girlfriend completely exposed. That level of unprofessionalism and lack of privacy is unacceptable for any hotel, especially one charging premium prices. Overall, this hotel was nowhere near worth the cost. The room felt outdated, unclean, and poorly managed. Disappointed is an understatement, and I genuinely believe some form of refund or compensation is deserved for how bad this experience was.
As someone who always stays at a Hilton hotel and many Embassy Suites, this one is sadly in need of major upgrades and repairs. Employees and staff seem to have attitudes or just not friendly. The mattresses have seen there day our backs hurt every night. Rugs in room were dirty and lots of stains. Shower has black mold, and bottom of bathroom door was needing to be painted, shower head was not attached properly. The buffet breakfast especially when ordering omelet, cook didn’t even explain the process, so people were just standing in line instead of having a sign to say “fill out slip of paper with your name” There was a coffee station but no where to put your food while you prepped your coffee. Making it difficult to hold tray and set up your coffee. We were Premier and free snacks, sodas and water were supposed to be restocked everyday. Yet everyday we had to call down after a day of sightseeing to ask for them to restock our room. We stayed at another Embassy Suites in Washington DC a few months ago and never had one complaint and never needed to call down for restocking. This Embassy Suites employee seemed and acted like they were being bothered to do their jobs. What a shame!
I recently stayed at an Embassy Suites in Mount Pleasant, SC, which is NOT this hotel. I needed a hotel receipt for a business stay and mistakenly contacted the downtown location for help. Even though this was not the hotel I stayed at, I had an incredible experience thanks to Stephanie Massey. She tracked down the right hotel and made sure to put me in contact with someone at the hotel I stayed at who could help me. Her exceptional customer service, professionalism, and persistence stood out. She went above and beyond to ensure I got my receipt. Employees like Stephanie are rare and the next time I am in Charleston, I will stay at this location, simply because if I can be treated this well when I didn't even stay there, imagine how I would be treated if I did! Thank you for the fantastic hospitality!
We stayed here a little bit ago to the Joe Koy show. What a great time. Rooms were clean had a bar that opened at 4. Had my first espresso martini and it was delicious haven't been able to find one that company. They also offer a 24 hour shuttle to the airport and other venues. Such a great time with the wife. Definitely will be back. But you should be warned the there is some military that stays there for when they do there monthly things so you really need to make reservations.
Look elsewhere! Please They really need to update their rooms. Everything is so old! The bathroom looks like it was put together by a person learning how to diy and failed miserably. The carpeting smells they need to rip it out! Whoever repainted the room I stayed in dropped some paint on the drapes that look like they’ve never been washed. The place is big and from the outside, it looks pretty. The inside is so disappointing. You can definitely find something else better than this.
The staff has been consistently helpful although when we mentioned about the quality of our room, they just said "we will be renovating soon." Not even an apology. That doesn't address our stay now. Hilton should be ashamed of this property. It feels like a worn out college dorm room. The furniture is beat up, carpet torn and stained, there is no place to hang a towel in the bathroom, the mirror over the sofa (which is worn out too) is mounted crooked, the curtains to the interior facing window are barely hanging on the rod, and there are no exterior windows so the lighting is poor. For the money we paid this is beyond a disappointment. I expect more from an Embassy Suites and far more from Hilton. 3-7-2026: To add insult to injury here, I received the response below from the hotel WHILE I WAS STILL STAYING HERE. It is nice that for service recovery they make me now call a help line and reiterate the whole situation again. What horrible management of customer concerns. Downgrading my score to 1. They had a chance to recover this one and they have now failed.
